Our Juniors’ Schoolhouse @ Tanjong Katong

About Us

*Our Juniors’ Schoolhouse @ Tanjong Katong is SPARK-certified

We understand the importance of not leaving the choice of preschool care and education all to chance. With this thoughtful intention, Our Juniors’ Schoolhouse was established in 2003. Firmly believing that the interests of our children are of paramount importance, we came up with the name ‘Our Juniors’ Schoolhouse’.

Since its establishment, Our Juniors’ Schoolhouse has provided our pre-schoolers with high quality English-Mandarin bilingual programmes and the finest child care services. Our holistic approach to learning and development has helped prepare the children physically, intellectually, emotionally, socially, artistically for academic purposes and for life.

At Our Juniors’ Schoolhouse, we believe that quality early childhood education has life-long impact on our children. Hence, our philosophy is to nurture a child in accordance to his/ her unique ability, talent and potential. Our educators adopt pertinent teaching approaches which compliment children’s learning in order to build their confidence levels.

We place strong emphasis on having a team of passionate, dedicated and well-qualified educators to implement our education model which focuses on cultural diversity and bilingualism. To further provide our children with opportunities to experiment, explore and to encourage their problem-solving attitudes, we have in place exciting discovery themes, comprehensive literacy and mathematics programmes, coupled with hands-on approaches.

We would like to highlight Our Juniors’ Schoolhouse’s physical environment, an aspect which we are proud of. Located within serene and private neighbourhoods, our children are able to enjoy their learning processes with minimal external disturbances. Besides featuring a well-ventilated and bright environment, some of Our Juniors’ Schoolhouse’s branches are also surrounded by nature. These factors further create a conducive learning environment for our children during the curriculum hours.

In addition, we are well-equipped with outdoor facilities which are specially built. To name a few, we have a playground, sand pit and water-play feature to provide our children with a variety of choices to both learn and play.

After an extensive refurbishment, Our Juniors’ Schoolhouse @ Tanjong Katong has turned into a cheery, fresh and inviting child care centre! Situated in a single-storey detached house with plenty of outdoor play space and facilities in a peaceful residential neighbourhood, meticulous planning with children’s well-being in mind was done to ensure that our children are provided with the best environment and facilities. Our facilities include a unique water play area with rain showers on top, a comprehensive playground as well as a sand pit. With our team of dedicated teachers together with the holistically-designed Juniors’ Curriculum, we are confident of providing a stimulating environment for our juniors and bringing them through fruitful learning journeys!

Meet Our Principal, Ms Geraldine Merican

Having spent more than a decade as an early childhood educator and as a mother herself, Ms Geraldine believes in building a positive relationship with every child and their family. At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child’s success is the positive involvement of parents (Jane D. Hull).

Her experienced and passionate team of educators shares her beliefs and strives to provide opportunities that opens the minds and touches the hearts of each child and family.

Our Bilingual – Bicultural Curriculum

Math Programme

Our Math Programme introduces mathematical concepts through exciting stories that expound on fundamental theories. Learning is reinforced through hands–on activities, the use of Math resources, and everyday materials that the children can easily relate to. We also promote primary school readiness while instilling a love for learning.

Bilingual & Bicultural Focus

Literacy in English language is systematically nurtured. It includes vocabulary, phonological awareness, recognition of letters, words, print, comprehension, creative writing, enjoyment of books, and other texts . Our English-Mandarin bilingual focus and East-West bicultural exposure nurtures competent communicators in both languages. We believe that the key to cultivating children’s lifelong interest in learning the Chinese language is to grow their appreciation of the Chinese culture.

Our Exciting Discovery Themes

Chosen over a wide range of subjects and topics that are developmentally appropriate, our themes include the study of Science, Technology, Arts, Music, and Social Studies. Our global perspective strives to enhance our children’s appreciation of the dynamic world around them and promotes their global thinking.

Daily Outdoor Activity

Children are naturally drawn to playing outside, which allows them to explore their environment, develop muscle strength and coordination, and gain self-confidence. It also increases their flexibility and fine and gross motor skills!
Our daily outdoor activities include water play, playground fun, cycling, planting, and chalk drawing.

Music & Movement

Incorporating music and movement helps young children with social interaction and language growth. Aligned with our bicultural focus, our children are exposed to many traditional and cultural musical instruments, which they learn about, play with, and sing and dance to the music they make.

Here are just some words from our happy parents!

We wish to highlight our appreciation to the Principals, Théo’s homeroom teachers, and all other staff of Our Juniors’ schoolhouse @ Tanjong Katong who have been taking care of Théo since he was 2 years old. Despite having to learn four languages (French & Japanese at home; English & Chinese at OJS), we have seen the progress Théo has made in various aspects. He is now a more confident boy all thanks to the Centre! We loved the Centre’s open and friendly envinronment, bilingual curriculum, outdoor activities, as well as the various events (e.g. Chinese New Year Celebration & Mother’s Day Tea Party) that encouraged parents to be actively involved in. All the memories created from the events and all the craftwork Théo has made will remain as treasures of our life. We have been sharing these memories with Théo from time to time so he can remember all the fun times he had spent at the Centre! Thank you once again for celebrating our farewell party and giving the nice gifts to Théo. He loves both the Paw Patrol’s activity book and Mickey’s colouring book. Although we are sad to leave OJS, we are sure that our paths would still cross as we will still be living in the Katong area!
